MCG, Tennis Australia and The Age

We arrived at the Melbourne Cricket Club last Tuesday morning, where we met and interviewed the MCC librarian, David Studham. He then took us on a tour of the MCG, including the National Sports Museum.

That afternoon, we journeyed across the tracks to the Tennis Australia headquarters at Rod Laver Arena. We interviewed the president of TA, Geoff Pollard. We had some issues with the audio, but aside from that, it went quite smoothly. Geoff then took us on a tour of TA and Rod Laver, which included a walk along the Walk of Fame.

On Wednesday morning, we headed over to Olympic Park to speak to Greg Brentnall, Melbourne Storm General Manager of Development. Unfortunately, due to moisture issues, we were unable to film. Fortunately we were able to record some audio on an iPhone.

Wednesday afternoon saw us take over the corridor in the Age building to speak to Sam Lane and Rohan Connoly. Fortunately, the moisture in the camera had disapated by then and both interviews went off without a hitch.

Darkness Visible music video – progress report

So I’ve been a little slack with updating this blog recently – I’ll blame that on my continuing search for employment in addition to having several projects going on at once.

I am happy to report that the Darkness Visible clip is nearing completion. I’ve inserted the live footage and merely need to tweak the effects. I hope to have the first (and hopefully final!) draft completed within the next week or two.

Started putting together the Darkness Visible clip yesterday. Spent about 5 hours working on it, and cut together most of the location footage. It’s mostly just dropping in the live footage now, and then playing around with effects. Probably won’t get a chance to do that for another day or two though.

Yesterday we made the trek over to the Como building to shoot an interview with Ten/One sports reporter Roger Oldridge. Ran for about 20min and he gave some really good answers.

Today, we set up outside the MCG and later Etihad Stadium to shoot some footy crowd voxies. Got roughly 20-odd, some good, some not-so-good. Got some cutaway shots of each stadium, as well as the tennis complex.

Just as I was changing trains at Flinders Street to head home, a kamikaze pigeon nearly collided with my face.

We went to AAMI Park on the evening of the first ever game played there. The mic was lacking in power and we had no spare batteries on us, so we couldn’t get the planned voxies. I managed to get some decent shots of the exterior of the new stadium though. Just finished as the rain hit, and boy did it hit hard. The walk back to Fed Square was made more difficult by the wind turning my umbrella inside out several times.

The guys went out over the weekend and shot an interview witha journalist from the Age, as well as a bunch of vox pops outside the MCG before the Collingwood/Carlton game.

I came into SYN around 3 to get the footage off them, and got a rather nasty reminder that I need to format my hard drive to NTFS. Fortunately someone was able to lend me an NTFS drive until I do that.

Going to log all the footage sometime over the next few days.

Huzzah! I have finally graduated from Swinburne. I am now the proud holder of an Advanced Diploma of Multimedia (Design). The ceremony was much shorter than expected, which was a good thing, but that was counterbalanced somewhat by sweltering in academic regalia. Before the ceremony, everyone assembled in the Chandelier Room at Hawthorn Town Hall. That’s 150 people’s body heat combined with several chandeliers full of incandescent lights.

Good to see those TAFE people who opted to come to the ceremony, thinking of seeing if everyone wants to catch up for drinks sometime soon.

Sports Sideways production

Had the first production meeting with the Sports Sideways crew – basically just a meet-and-greet and a basic rundown of the program concept. Another production meeting next week, and then the first shoot the following weekend.

The video shoot for Darkness Visible’s self-titled song went well today. Perfect weather, and we kept way ahead of schedule. The only unfortunate thing was not having the other guitarist (who broke his arm), but we had the singer’s boyfriend as a stand-in. We had Kye Lewis on camera (using a Sony A1P HDV cam), and a professional makeup girl by the name of Danielle, who did an absolutely fantastic job.

Started off at St Kilda General Cemetery, where we filmed for a half an hour or so, and then headed over to Alma Park, where there is a delightfully twisted piece of play equipment. A certain amount of craziness ensued when an ice cream truck pulled up, but I won’t say much about that until the video is released.

Kye will be ingesting and transcoding the footage, and then delivering it to me so I can cut everything together. Can’t wait to get stuck into it.

Live at the Lawn – the big day

Phew. Loooooong day today. Roughly 12 hours from my call in the morning until bump out was finished. So I tired I don’t think I could stay out partying with the crew even if I was able to.

The stage took the longest to put together, roughly two or three hours. Us SYN/C31 types make one hell of a team though. The pro guys said we were the best bunch of volunteers they had worked with, or something to that effect. Got a crash course in mics too.

Extremely pleased with how the show went. The setup was so much bigger than last year, and the crowd that formed to watch was accordingly larger than 2009′s.

Bump out went pretty smoothly, though we had to cordon off a bit of the footpath for a few to get some of the longer, more unwieldy items across to the truck.

Bed now, as I have the Darkness Visible shoot tomorrow.

Well done team, can’t wait for the next one.
